The Visitor by Patrick R. Chalmers

(Pan to be found in Maryanne & Marigold's garden....with peanuts!)  xo

Stumbled across this lovely poem in a 1938 edition of the Young Folks Shelf of Books
that I found in a thrift bin.  The entire book was a lovely read, all the old poems I remembered from my childhood. (and quite a few that would cause such an uproar today in our sanitized world!) ;)
When did all those classics go away I wonder?
And the vocabulary!  Oh, how I relish the Old Words!

Since I adore All Things Pan, and Pan is so very hard to find-especially in children's lit, I was particularly taken with this piece.

I see it as a brilliant diversity piece (for the time period) with the mention of "as Christian as yourself" and find it to be very Unitarian in its message.

And really, who *doesn't* want a little pagan faun piping on their porch?  :)

I hope you enjoy it as much as I do.

THE VISITOR
by Patrick R. Chalmers

The white goat Amaryllis,
She wandered at her will
At time of daffodillies
Afar and up the hill:
We hunted and we halloa'd
And back she came at dawn
But what d'you think had followed?--
A little, pagan Faun!

His face was like a berry,
His ears were high and pricked:
Tip-tap-his hoofs came merry
As up the hill he clicked;
A junket for his winning
We set in dairy delf;
He ate it pert and grinning-
As Christian as yourself!

He stayed about the steading
A fortnight, say, or more;
A blanket for his bedding
We spread beside the door;
And when the cocks crowed clearly
Before the dawn was ripe,
He called the milkmaids cheerly
Upon a reedy pipe!

That fortnight of his staying
The work went smooth as silk:
The hens were all in laying
The cows were all in milk;
And the-and then one morning
The maids woke up at day
Without his oaten warning-
And found he'd gone away.

He left no trace behind him;
Bit still the milkmaids deem
That they, perhaps may find him
With butter and with cream:
Beside the door they set them
In bowl and golden pat,
But no one comes to get them-
Unless maybe, the cat.

The white goat Amaryllis,
She wanders at her will
At time of daffodillies,
Away up Woolcombe hill;
She stay until the morrow,
Then back she comes at dawn;
But never-to our sorrow-
The little, pagan Faun.

WHOA, GOAT! The Goat Borrower Has a Plan!

WHOA, GOAT!
The Goat Borrower Has A Plan
********
So.
As some of you may know from being on the Facebook Sisterhood of the Goat page, the Goat Borrower (that's me) has a New Plan.  It's always good to have a New Plan.  Keeps a person Out of Trouble.
Or that's what my Uncle Whitey always said.

I once saw him pull a stump with our riding lawn tractor.  On two wheels.  It took awhile.
The fact that the stump didn't knock his brains out when it gave said to my seven year old self:
 "You can do anything!"
And (bonus!) a week later we got to get a new lawn tractor!

One time he downed, I'm thinking, one too many Gennys and rolled right off the new roof of the garage he was helping the neighbors build.  It was sort of graceful....until he hit bottom.
The upstairs smelled like Ben Gay for a week.  But when he finally came out of his bedroom and winked at me it said to my eight year old self:  "You can do anything.  But it's probably not a good idea to do that."

There was also the time the (same) neighbor drilled straight through his palm while he was holding a tin panel for the shed they were building. In one side and out the other. I remember he let me watch as he ran water in the sink and red blood swirled round and round.  I think he put a band aid on it.
And my nine year old self said:
"Yeah.  This guy is my superhero."

I loved my Uncle Whitey. So very much.
He taught me everything I needed to know.
Shoot a gun.
Tell the truth.
Never 'argu'. (argue)
And (I'm assuming when he needed quiet time) how to make a "rabbit catcher."
(You know, that wooden crate with a carrot on a string.....then be very, very quiet.....and wait......it may take awhile.)

So yeah, thanks to my Uncle Whitey I've never been afraid to try new things.

Inspired by some romantic vintage photos of goat carts and finally, the pop over the edge of decision,
 the stellar work of
I decided that *I* should join the colorful gypsy world of goat driving!

Armed with very little written literature (not a lot out there) and a Farmer with 50 plus years of driving drafts,  I set out to follow Rule 1:  Choose the right goats.
Hmm.  Well, since Darla just gave birth to two perfectly wonderful bucks, Fergus and Finnian, and I'm in the market to convince Farmer to wether and keep them, this should be the perfect plan to prove they are Useful.

But, there's still the Meantime to consider.

Enter:  Kevin and Dave!
Two homeless and rather bereft bucks that came to stay with us.
Dairy, in a world of Boers, they don't exactly fit in.
(Kevin is Daa to Fergus and Finnian-which just proves that Farmer goes to great lengths to shut me up...his version of the rabbit catcher.)
I somehow fell in love with them, probably due to their sweet nature and willingness to go with the flow.
I've been on a campaign to save them as well as Farmer keeps giving them The Eye.....and I worry.

So.......perfect, right?
Useful.

They already move in unison.......

And don't mind Odd Whims.......

Easy peasy, eh?

So I set off to follow Rule 2:  Halter your goats.

Picked up some soft nylon rope, circles and snaps because Farmer is a whiz at making halters then
set out to the barn and walked innocently into the pasture.

I submit the following:

GOAT DRIVING DIARY ENTRY:  DAY 1
Yeah, so....the training didn't go so well today. Went to the pasture to get Kevin and Dave and the next thing I know....WHAM.....right in the middle of a Buck Fight! Apparently one of the pygmy goats was...uh, desirable, and our big buck, Sweet Bill, went NUTS! I've never seen such a thing. Ramming everything and everybody. I'm trying to catch the pygmy. Kevin and Dave are *doing* each other. Kevin and Dave are *doing themselves.  Kevin and Dave in a Pan-like frenzy sans syrinx.   3 peni (what *is* the plural of goat penis?) flailing like fire hoses......pee arcing everywhere in rainbow colors into the sunshine....me in the middle. Murderous screams. (mine) It was *not* pretty. So yeah, the training didn't go well today.

note to self:  Reassess Rule 1
reminder:  Do not kiss Kevin and Dave on the lips anymore.

SWEET  RUDE BILL

So onward.....'cause like my Uncle Whitey used to say:  "It's always good to have a New Plan."

Stay Tuned!

The Great God Kevin: A Lesser Known Greek Myth

THE GREAT GOD KEVIN:
 A LESSER KNOWN GREEK MYTH
~
A Sisterhood of the Goat Story
by:  Mimi Foxmorton

****************

One day on the farm
While with one of my brothers
There arrived a white goat
That was not like the others.

He passed my cow Lizzie
And Pony the horse

A donkey named Elvis

And Miss Darla, of course.

The chickens ignored him
But that's how they act

This goat was quite different
And that was a fact.

He stood tall and lean
With a mop on his head
Had a lopsided grin
And went where I led.

His eyes were quite knowing
He looked straight at me

And settled right down
Just as calm as could be.

The others were curious
As goats always are

'Cept for Darla
Who rammed him
And said,
"That's my Maa!"

A wee calf looked on him
With great, huge, round eyes

The barn yard was silent
You could hear the wind's sighs.

I searched through my memory
In a blink I did know it
"You're the Great God Pan." I did breathe
You can't help but show it.

"You are right." spoke the goat
Voice like honey and heaven
"But to lessen the fuss
Won't you please call me Kevin?"

"I've come from Arcadia
Near Olympus above
I noticed one day
That you needed some love."

"I'm here to remind you
That you are not alone"

"Your respect for all creatures
From above it has shone."

"The Sisterhood summoned me
They are quite astute"

"And to prove my devotion
I'll play on my flute!"

The music flowed forth
His Pan pipe I did hear
So ethereal it was
That I shed one happy tear.

The notes they dripped o'er me
Not one of them tragic
I knew then I was gifted
With goat love......

....and magic!

"'Tis true, then." I spoke
When the music had faded
"Those who say it's not true
Must surely be jaded."

"In sooth there are many
Who've forgotten the story
Of Pan on the hillside
In all of his glory."

"My Father was Hermes
The great messenger god
My mother, I knew her
For only a nod."

"I've lived many tales
Caused a wee bit of trouble
But delight to all hearts
That I've brought, it is double."

"There's the story of Syrinx
Who I thought I did need"

photo courtesy of Marigold & the Goatmother
Hi, Marigold!  Hi, Goatmother!  xox

"My pipe here you see
It was made from her reed."

"I've loved many a nymph
And sweet Echo I married
Her voice still you can hear
Down the lone path it's carried."

"I once dressed like a sheep
Fell in love with the Moon"

note to the Goatmother-I only wore it for a second-just for modeling.....I promise   ~Yellow Dog

"But she uncovered my plan
And I was sent away soon."

"I frighten the herds
And cause Panic, too
With my very fine yell of:
"Hey!  YIP!  YIP!  YOOOOO!"

"You see it's not good
To forget the old tale
Our children must know now
We can't let them fail."

"I ask you to bring
 The myths back to light
Create love for old stories
So they're not lost in the night."

So I gathered my goaties
And started to tell
Of the Great God, um...Kevin
And his magical yell.

Our new goat was delighted
So he gave his great shout!
Darla whispered to me-
"Maaa, you figured it out!"

And from that day forward
We read every day
Stories from near
And from far, far away.

For a child's imagination
Is a miracle to behold

And as Kevin will tell you...
More precious than gold.

~The End~

~Hey! I wanted to be the last picture!
~Fine Darla, you can be the last picture.

~You still love me best, right?
~I still love you best, Darla.
~Good.  Then you won't mind if I do this.........

That's MY end!

Good night, everyone, from Maamaa and Me!
