The Visitor by Patrick R. Chalmers

(Pan to be found in Maryanne & Marigold's garden....with peanuts!)  xo

Stumbled across this lovely poem in a 1938 edition of the Young Folks Shelf of Books
that I found in a thrift bin.  The entire book was a lovely read, all the old poems I remembered from my childhood. (and quite a few that would cause such an uproar today in our sanitized world!) ;)
When did all those classics go away I wonder?
And the vocabulary!  Oh, how I relish the Old Words!

Since I adore All Things Pan, and Pan is so very hard to find-especially in children's lit, I was particularly taken with this piece.

I see it as a brilliant diversity piece (for the time period) with the mention of "as Christian as yourself" and find it to be very Unitarian in its message.

And really, who *doesn't* want a little pagan faun piping on their porch?  :)

I hope you enjoy it as much as I do.

THE VISITOR
by Patrick R. Chalmers

The white goat Amaryllis,
She wandered at her will
At time of daffodillies
Afar and up the hill:
We hunted and we halloa'd
And back she came at dawn
But what d'you think had followed?--
A little, pagan Faun!

His face was like a berry,
His ears were high and pricked:
Tip-tap-his hoofs came merry
As up the hill he clicked;
A junket for his winning
We set in dairy delf;
He ate it pert and grinning-
As Christian as yourself!

He stayed about the steading
A fortnight, say, or more;
A blanket for his bedding
We spread beside the door;
And when the cocks crowed clearly
Before the dawn was ripe,
He called the milkmaids cheerly
Upon a reedy pipe!

That fortnight of his staying
The work went smooth as silk:
The hens were all in laying
The cows were all in milk;
And the-and then one morning
The maids woke up at day
Without his oaten warning-
And found he'd gone away.

He left no trace behind him;
Bit still the milkmaids deem
That they, perhaps may find him
With butter and with cream:
Beside the door they set them
In bowl and golden pat,
But no one comes to get them-
Unless maybe, the cat.

The white goat Amaryllis,
She wanders at her will
At time of daffodillies,
Away up Woolcombe hill;
She stay until the morrow,
Then back she comes at dawn;
But never-to our sorrow-
The little, pagan Faun.

THE WISDOM of SAGE SISTER

SAGE SISTER SPEAKS......

art by Dame Laura Knight (1877-1970)

Sage Sister's Wisdom For Those Who Should Know Better.....But Usually Don't.......

Sage Sister, a product of a combination of Sisterhood of the Goat and my (hilarious?  painful?  reality check?) learning adventures on my Borrowed Farm.

Lots of things have happened to me in the course of the last two years of being The Goat Borrower and, from time to time, Sage Sister is compelled to speak.

This is her advice thus far......

Words of Wisdom from the Sage Sister:
Fo people who ought to know better....but don’t.

Please find The Sisterhood of the Goat on Facebook and join us for lots and lots of fun farm adventures!

#1. "NEVER ENTER THE BUCK BARN DURING RUT SEASON WITH AN OPEN JAR OF MOLASSES."

#2.  “NEVER ATTEMPT TO WALK THROUGH THE GOAT PASTURE WHILST HIDING A BANANA IN THE POCKET OF YOUR GOOD DRESS PANTS.”

#3.  “YOU KNOW THOSE TINY METAL THINGS ON PIGTAIL ELASTICS?  IF YOU SHOULD THINK ABOUT LEANING OVER THE HOT FENCE TO FEED YOUR COW A YULE TREAT…DON’T.”

#4.  “IF, AFTER HAVING FED YOUR COW CLEMENTINES, YOU RUN OUT OF SAID CLEMENTINES, DO NOT TURN YOUR BACK ON YOUR COW TO CLOSE THE GATE.  COW HUGS ARE NOT COMFORTING, HOWEVER MUCH YOU’D LIKE TO THINK OTHERWISE.”

Stay tuned for more of Sage Sister........pretty much as the Incidents occur........

In the meantime....come find us on Facebook!  Just search for Sisterhood of the Goat

Maaaaing for PEACE

"Humanity's true moral test, its fundamental test, consists of its attitude toward those who are at its mercy: animals. And in this respect, human kind has suffered a fundamental debacle, a debacle so fundamental that all others stem from it.

-- Milan Kundera, The Unbearable Lightness of Being

We Do Have Need of Thee

I.
O goat-foot God of Arcady!
This modern world is grey and old,
And what remains to us of thee?

No more the shepherd lads in glee
Throw apples at thy wattled fold,

O goat-foot God of Arcady!

Nor through the laurels can one see
Thy soft brown limbs, thy beard of gold,
And what remains to us of thee?

And dull and dead our Thames would be,
For here the winds are chill and cold,

O goat-foot God of Arcady!

Then keep the tomb of Helice,
Thine olive-woods, thy vine-clad wold,
And what remains to us of thee?

Though many an unsung elegy
Sleeps in the reeds our rivers hold,
O goat-foot God of Arcady!
Ah, what remains to us of thee?

II.
Ah, leave the hills of Arcady,
Thy satyrs and their wanton play,
This modern world hath need of thee.

No nymph or Faun indeed have we,
For Faun and nymph are old and grey,

Ah, leave the hills of Arcady!

This is the land where liberty
Lit grave-browed Milton on his way,
This modern world hath need of thee!

A land of ancient chivalry
Where gentle Sidney saw the day,

Ah, leave the hills of Arcady!

This fierce sea-lion of the sea,
This England lacks some stronger lay,
This modern world hath need of thee!

Then blow some trumpet loud and free,
And give thine oaten pipe away,
Ah, leave the hills of Arcady!
This modern world hath need of thee!
~Oscar Wilde

Our Pan

PAN

“What was he doing, the great god Pan,Down in the reeds by the river?
Spreading ruin and scattering ban,
Splashing and paddling with hoofs of a goat,
And breaking the golden lilies afloat
With the dragon-fly on the river.

He tore out a reed, the great god Pan,
From the deep cool bed of the river:
The limpid water turbidly ran,And the broken lilies a-dying lay,
and the dragon-fly had fled away,
Ere he brought it out of the river.

‘This is the way,’ laughed the great god Pan(Laughed while he sat by the river),
‘The only way, since gods began
To make sweet music, they could succeed.
Then, dropping his mouth to a hole in the reed,
He blew in power by the river.

Sweet, sweet, sweet, O Pan!
Piercing sweet by the river!
Blinding sweet, O great god Pan!
The sun on the hill forgot to die and the lilies revived,
And the dragon-fly came back to dream on the river.

Yet half a beast is the great god Pan,
To laugh as he sits by the river,
Making a poet out of a man:
The true gods sigh for the cost and pain,
For the reed which grows nevermore again
As a reed with the reeds in the river.”

E. B. Browning.

Sweet Vintage Gods of Hogmanay!

Sweet vintage gods of Hogmanay!

Look what landed on my front steps this afternoon!

My very special friend and goat sister, Teresa from Eden Hills (and Millie, the goat, too!) sent a box full of lovely, lovely vintage items to me !

Since this is Hogmanay e'en and tomorrow will be the Sisterhood of the Goat's FIRST anniversary, this couldn't have arrived at a better time!

Here's what was inside:

A plush red hat-perfect for Valentine's Day!

This hat has a perfect angle for a Vic crown piece to go with my new Yule garb!
Just look at those pearls!

This red hat has some delicate lace net trim and a beautiful diamond accent!

Also, a lovely black vintage clutch with a diamond clasp!
I adore hats.....but vintage purses are a true find!

And.......a most excellent vintage WEARABLE dress!
(That means I can wear it to work on days when they AREN'T expecting me to show up in garb!
Of course, I don't know how many days that really is.....they don't really notice any more.)  ;)

BUT WAIT......THERE'S MORE!

About a week ago, a very special little goat named Angel Baby and her Maa, Haggers,
gifted me with an ENORMOUS amount of vintage finds!
The box weighed in at 16 pounds!  I'm not kidding!  16 pounds!
AB and Haggers are new and special friends and it was gracious of them to remember my love
of precious junque and to be so kind as to share!

The box has soooooo many things in it I haven't had a chance to properly sort through and do pics yet but, because AB was worried, I did rescue her Dead Mouse right away!
Can you find Angel Baby's Dead Mouse?

The box is chock full of fabric, jewelry, funny things, precious things...and love.

My humble thanks to these two wonderful friends.......
(and their goats!)
for not only gifting me with such beautiful things from the heart but also for
carrying me through this past year of joyously finding myself a Goat Sister!

Much love.......and a Happy New Year to you all!
xox
~Mimi

ps.  Bet you can't wait to go through that box with me, eh?
;)
